That distinctive color…
My friends, that is the color of summer. Wildflowers in bloom, shorts and flip flops coming out of hiding, barbecues being fired up- all signs that we are about to pack away our Snuggies and get ready for 100 degree days. At the winery, when the calendar hits May, it means only one thing- Rosé!
This photo was taken just a few days back as the production team began to prepare this vintage for a summertime debut. Just before they got to work, Dave had a grin from ear to ear as he opened the door to a filling tank and motioned for me get a look and smell at what he was about to bottle. Now, when Dave Reilly asks me to stick my head in a tank, I am usually skeptical of his motives. Luckily, the aroma of the 2012 Rosé was already filling the room, so I knew he was just showing off. We have been regularly tasting this wine for a few months (sometimes two to three times a day- you know, just to be sure), so we already knew that Dave had every right to be proud of this pink stunner. Aromatic, well balanced, and elegant- all of the hallmarks of a great dry Rosé. Be on the lookout for this wine in the very near future!
The 2012 Duchman Family Rosé will be available exclusively in our tasting room beginning in late May. Only 202 cases produced, so keep an eye on your email for the official release date.
This limited edition wine was hand harvested from the 17 acre vineyard adjacent to Duchman Family Winery in 2010. Nero d’Avola is native to Sicily and grows best in hot, steamy climates, making it a natural match for Central Texas.
The few acres of Nero planted in 2004 will always offer a very limited yield. With such small quantities comes a greater ability to control quality and a perfect opportunity to experiment with new techniques.
Winemaker Dave Reilly spent an unusual amount of time watching over the precious few barrels of Nero. After months of anticipation, it became clear why he had such a soft spot for those barrels- the wine inside was powerful yet elegant, a fantastic example of the potential of the varietal in Texas. Enticing spice notes are followed by an evolving palate of blueberry and plum, leading into a long, rich finish. Only 32 cases produced.
We made the limited release available to our wine club, and it flew off the shelves. Perhaps being a bit selfish, we stashed away a few cases to enjoy at some of our spirited “meetings.” After a long discussion and a few bottles of wine, we decided to release our coveted cases of Nero to the general public in our tasting room. As of today, under five cases left. Grab a bottle while they last!!
“Surrounded by the Hill Country’s rugged beauty and filled with a growing number of wineries and food destinations,” writes Paula Disbrowe of Southern Living, “the area around Driftwood has earned the nickname ‘the Napa of Texas.'”
Winemaker Dave Reilly “makes some of the best white wines in Texas (try the Vermentino or Trebbiano) at the Duchman Family Winery.”
The Duchman Family Winery and winemaker Dave Reilly (above) are featured in the November issue of the magazine.
Her guide for the piece was none other than the inimitable Scott Roberts of the Salt Lick Bar-B-Que, a “brisket mecca that ships meat around the globe,” owned by Scott’s family since 1902.
